Rural Health Statistics report

  • It is an annual report released by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
  • The report aims to provide an overview of the infrastructure existing at various levels of healthcare facilities across states and union territories in the country.
  • The number of specialist doctors working in the CHCs in 2005 was 3,550, which has increased by 25% to 4,485 in 2022.

What does the report say

  • The Community Health Centres (CHCs) in India have a shortfall of nearly 80% of the specialists required.

The shortfall for various specialities are;

  • There exists a 83.2% shortfall of surgeons.
  • For obstetricians and gynaecologists, the shortfall is 74.2%.
  • For physicians there exists a shortfall of 79.1%.
  • And for paediatricians there si81.6%).

Along with the shortage of specialists there is a shortage of women health workers and auxiliary nursing midwives, of about 14.4%  in primary health centres and sub-centres.

Community Health Centres (CHCs)

CHCs are block-level health facilities which have at least 30 beds and are supposed to provide basic care related to surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics and general medicine.

Currently there exists about 6,064 Community Health Centres across the whole of India.
