Pelé
- Pelé was one of the greatest and best-known footballers in modern history.
- Born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento as a son of a Brazilian football player Dondinho and Celeste Arantes.
- Pelé joined the Brazil national team at the age of 16.
- He won three FIFA World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970) and remains as the only player to do so till now.
- He was nicknamed O Rei meaning The King following the 1958 tournament.
- Pelé is the joint-top goal scorer for Brazil by scoring 77 goals in 92 games.
- At the club level, Pelé was Santos’ all-time top goal scorer by scoring 643 goals in 659 games.
- Pelé retired in 1977, and later became a worldwide ambassador for football and made many acting and commercial ventures.
- He was appointed as minister of sports of Brazil in January 1995.
- During his tenure, he initiated multiple reforms against corruption in state football associations.
- He resigned from the post of minister on 30 April 1998.
- He died on Thursday (29th December 2022) at the age of 82 after battling cancer.
