What is the National Crime Records Bureau?

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is an Indian government institution responsible for collecting and analyzing crime statistics. On March 11, 1986, the NCRB was created. It reports to the Ministry of Home Affairs and is based in New Delhi.

What are the responsibilities of NCRB?

  • Providing Indian Police with IT solutions and criminal intelligence
  • Serving as a depository for crime and criminal information
  • assisting investigators in linking crime to criminals

What does the latest report of NCRB tell us about women’s safety?

  • Violence Against Women:
    • According to reports, Delhi is the country’s most dangerous metropolitan city for women.
    • In 2022, the city recorded an average of three rape cases per day, for a total of 1,204 rape crimes.
    • For the third year in a row, there were 14,158 cases of crime against women, the highest number among 19 metropolitan cities.
    • Other crimes committed against women included kidnapping or abduction, dowry deaths, and mistreatment by husbands or family.
  • Police Response:
    • According to a senior police official, in most cases of rape and assault, the victim and the offender are well-known to one other, making prevention difficult.
    • The police have arranged self-defence training camps and undertaken awareness campaigns to teach women about safe and risky settings.
    • Attempts have been made to encourage women to file complaints, which has resulted in an increase in reported cases, which could suggest increased awareness of police operations.
  • Child Abuse and Neglect:
    • In Delhi, there were 7,400 occurrences of crime against children, including 22 murders.
    • According to reports, the number of unreported incidents has reduced as more youngsters file complaints.
  • Crime Against Senior Citizens:
    • The number of crimes committed against older adults grew from 1,166 in 2021 to 1,313 in 2022.
  • Computer Crime:
    • Cybercrime instances more than doubled in 2022, jumping from 345 in 2021 to 685 in 2022.
  • Total Crime:
    • The city recorded 501 murders and 106 occurrences of human trafficking.
    • According to the report, there has been a considerable increase in total crime, indicating a difficult law and order scenario.

The research reveals that law enforcement, administration, and society must work together to address the core causes of crime, strengthen safety measures, and create a more secure environment for women, children, and other vulnerable groups in Delhi. Any strategy to combat crime and improve public safety must include public awareness, education, and effective law enforcement.
