Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki:
- It is a volcanic mountain situated in East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia on the Flores Island.
- The volcano is part of a twin-volcano system that local residents view as a pair of “male and female” mountains.
- The current eruption is happening at the male volcano, Lewotobi Lakilaki, while the female counterpart is called Lewotobi Perempuan.
- Both mountains are stratovolcanoes, the most common type of volcano worldwide, formed by layers of lava that repeatedly flow from their craters.
About Stratovolcanoes?
- They are also known as composite volcanoes (cone-shaped, having steep sides made of hardened ash and lava).
- They are mostly part of large volcanic systems around the Ring of Fire.
- The most commonly found rocks around these volcanoes are Andesites.
- They are the most commonly found volcanic systems in the world (~60% of the Earth’s individual volcanoes).
- They are characterised for their lavas that are cooler and more viscous than basalt.
