One Day One Genome

One Day One Genome

Context

Recently, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) launched the  ‘One Day, One Genome’ initiative that aims to harness India’s microbial potential.

  • The programme underscores the critical importance of microorganisms in ecosystems, agriculture, and human health, aligning with India’s broader goals in scientific innovation and sustainable development.

Objectives and Focus Areas

  • Showcasing India’s Unique Microbial Species: Emphasising their roles in environmental sustainability, agriculture, and human health.
  • Genome sequencing of microorganisms: to explore microbial capacities for enzyme production, antimicrobial resistance, and bioactive compounds.
    • It also promotes research and innovation in environmental protection, agricultureand healthcare improvement.

Importance of Microorganisms

  • Environmental Role:
    • Participate in biogeochemical cycles, soil formation, and degradation of toxic pollutants.
    • Assist in methane production and maintaining planetary homeostasis.
  • Agriculture:
    • Aid in nitrogen fixation, nutrient cycling, and maintaining soil fertility.
    • Help control pests and weeds and provide stress resilience to crops.
    • Symbiotic relationships with plants improve nutrient and water absorption.
  • Human Health:
    • Microbial cells outnumber human cells in the body, aiding digestion, immunity, and mental health.
    • Pathogenic microorganisms cause infectious diseases, while non-pathogenic microbes strengthen immunity.

Initiative Details

  • It is led by BRIC in collaboration with the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG) under DBT.
  • Deliverables:
    • Release of annotated bacterial genomes, isolated within India, made publicly accessible.
    • Accompanied by infographics, genome assembly details, and graphical summaries.
    • Promotes understanding of the scientific and industrial potential of microbes.

Significance of Genome Sequencing

  • Makes microbial genomic data accessible to the public, researchers, and industry.
  • Encourages innovations in environment management, agricultural productivity, and healthcare solutions.
  • Fosters public engagement and scientific discourse on microbial research.

Conclusion:

The ‘One Day, One Genome’ initiative exemplifies India’s commitment to leveraging science for societal and ecological well-being, promoting sustainable growth through innovation and microbial research.
