  • Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings of Draupadi Vastrapaharanam is going on an auction which will fetch up to twenty crore rupees.


  • Raja Ravi Varma who is widely referred to as The father of modern Indian art, he is famous for the realistic depiction of Indian gods and goddesses.
  • He is also credited for taking the paintings to the masses in India.
  • Raja Ravi Varma who is basically from Kerala was patronised by The Travancore rulers.
  • He was a student of Ramaswamy Naidu who was painter in the Royal Court and also he learnt the oil painting from Theodore Jensen who is a Dutch artist.
  • The Draupadi Vastrapaharanam is an episode from Mahabharata, The painting depicts the Vastrapaharanam of Draupadi.
  • Later he was patronised by Maharaja of Mysore and maharaja of Udaipur and also the rulers of Baroda.
  • He is credited in taking these paintings to the masses, for which he established a Lithographic press at Bombay in 1894 on the suggestion of T Madhavrao.


  • Ravi Varma is believed to have made more than 7000 paintings in his lifetime.
    His paintings contain features of European realism with Indian sensibilities, this makes his painting special.
