Utilization of AI in Meteorological Research


Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques are actively employed to enhance the predictive accuracy of weather, climate, and ocean forecasts across various institutes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

How AI & ML Have Contributed to Weather Prediction:

  • Enhanced short-range precipitation forecasts within 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day lead times, resulting in a reduction in bias.
  • Created high-resolution (300m) urban gridded meteorological datasets for temperature and precipitation.
  • Formulated the time-varying Normalized Difference Urbanization Index with a spatial resolution of 30 meters spanning from 1992 to 2023.
  • Developed very high-resolution precipitation datasets for verification purposes.
  • Currently exploring a Deep Learning approach for precipitation nowcasting utilizing data obtained from Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs).
